Description
An account of the resource
Aerial photographs of campus have been made periodically throughout UMBC's history. This 1969 view shows various ongoing construction projects, including the first dormitories (slightly above and left of center), the Physical Plant building (now the Public Safety Building) along Hilltop Circle (then called The Loop," which was only half finished), and the beginnings of site preparation where the Administration Building would be built. Along the top of the photograph may be seen I-95 under construction as well as its intersection with Rt. 166 at the top right. Kuhn recognized that having the interchange would be critical for UMBC, so he approached Governor Tawes in 1966 and asked for the interchange to be put into the I-95 plans. When Tawes asked John B. Funk, Chairman of the Maryland State Roads Commission, to make the change, Funk resisted by saying: We're just about done, we don't want any more projects." Tawes replied: You're going to have to put one in to have access to UMBC."

Each Fall semester, UMBC holds an opening ceremony known as Convocation. Faculty, staff, and students are all invited to attend. The incoming freshman participate in a processional along Academic Row to the Retriever Activities Center (RAC) for the ceremony. The faculty form a receiving line at the doors to the RAC and welcome the new students. Speeches are given, the alma mater is sung, and freshman are given UMBC pins to celebrate joining the UMBC community.

Description
An account of the resource
Although not UMBC's first literary journal, Bartleby is UMBC's longest running and continues to be one of our most well-known traditions. Originally based out of the English department, Bartleby has been published in several different formats and has, at times, accepted student, faculty, staff, and Baltimore-area submissions of poetry, literature, and artwork. Since 1989 the publication has accepted submissions that are student authored only. Bartleby is now funded by the SGA, managed and edited by UMBC students, and published every spring semester. The first issue carried the celebrated moniker, Bartleby, after a Herman Melville character. The journal has had several other titles, including Soup, Imagine, and Samsdatz, but has been published as Bartleby for the past 14 issues.

Description
An account of the resource
Although UMBC never had a segregated student body, whether by race or gender, our campus has struggled in many ways to increase its diversity of the student body. UMBC is now promoted as a diverse institution and this is part of the defining narrative of the school and a point of pride for many administrators, faculty, students, and alumni. UMBC has been recognized as having the second most diverse student body (Princeton Review, 2008) and as one of the top 25 most diverse national universities (U.S. News & World Report, 2012). What does a racially diverse student body mean at UMBC? During the 2014-2015 academic year, 44.2% of the student body self identified as white, 16.4% as African American or Black, 20% as Asian, 5.9% as Hispanic or Latino, and less than 1% self identified as American Indian, Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian, or Pacific Islander. Students that identify with two or more races made up 3.6% of the student body, while 4.8% did not self identify. International students were separated in this data and made up 4.6%. This data is distributed each year in several sources, including the annual Progress Report on Institutional Programs of Cultural Diversity, available through the Provost's Office.
Established in 1995, the Freedom Alliance is an active student organization on campus, serving as both an advocacy and social group for the LGBTQ communities at UMBC. They frequently sponsor movie nights, nationally known speakers, and well attended social events like Queer Prom. In 2007 the Freedom Alliance moved to a permanent office space in the University Center. This contact sheet shows images taken for The Retriever at a tabling event for National Coming Out Day in 1995. The grease pencil marks on the sheet show which images the photographer or newspaper editor selected for publication in the story about the event.

Description
An account of the resource
In 1994, UMBC was awarded a teaching grant from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI). The funding was directed towards the HHMI Scholars Program, an educational program that works with students from diverse backgrounds. Dr. Michael Summers was named an HHMI investigator in 1994, and his groundbreaking research at UMBC has focused on HIV-1, the retrovirus that causes AIDS, and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, a technique for learning more about the molecular components of the HIV-1 retrovirus. Dr. Summers has also been an active teacher and supporter of the Meyerhoff Scholars Program, including working to assist other universities to duplicate the success of the program at UMBC. In 2003, he spoke with pride for the work at UMBC: While I'm very proud of our research, it may be that in the end what I do with minority students is more important than what I do in the lab. I never thought I would be involved in a social movement like this."

Description
An account of the resource
Although the bwtech@UMBC Research & Technology Park opened in 2002, it was a project more than a decade in the making. After discovering an illegal garbage dump in 1990, the university decided to publicly make plans for the construction of a research park the following year. This announcement was met with skepticism from the community, who were concerned about another large-scale building in the area, traffic, and possible chemical leaks despite possible job opportunities and the economic benefits. Zoning conflicts between UMBC, Arbutus, and Catonsville lasted for years, ultimately resulting in the university agreeing to scale back the size of the project. Today, the 71-acre park's north and south campuses house more than 120 tech companies and research institutions.
