An account of the resource
The Affirmative Action Advisory Committee, comprised of faculty, associate and classified staff, and student volunteers was formed in order to advise Chancellor Hooker and the Director Human Relations on matters and issues related to implementation of UMBC's Affirmative Action Program." The report examined data from 1979-1986 and contained estimated goals for each department. The committee found that the representation of minority professors at UMBC was well below the availability of minority professors: 2.9% of tenured full professors, 5.6% of tenured associate professors, 8.2% of non-tenured professors, and only 17 of 365 full-time faculty positions (6 of the 17 from Africana Studies). In addition, black and female professors were disproportionately represented in lower ranks. From 1979-1986 some departments met their affirmative action goals, but most of the departments at UMBC with assigned hiring goals did not meet them in a timely matter.

Description
An account of the resource
The first homecoming celebration at UMBC was held in February 1976, after several false starts in the years preceding. The 1976 event included the Almost Anything Goes tournament, where student organizations competed against each other for prizes; a club volleyball tournament; a pep rally; and a basketball game against the Towson Tigers. In the 40 years since, UMBC has revised and reconfigured the annual Homecoming events, changing the time of year and which sport to highlight as The Big Game - without a football team, this honor has been given to lacrosse, field hockey, soccer, and basketball, among others. Nowadays, Homecoming tends to include a festival on the Quad, alumni reunions with academic departments, a spirited 5k around the Loop, and the annual bonfire outside of the Library. This year homecoming will run from October 5th to 8th.

Description
An account of the resource
Conflicting opinions about the naming scheme of UMBC’s buildings, and Academic IV in particular, motivated the formation of a committee to propose a formal process by which names could be approved. The report of the committee was sent to the UMBC Faculty Senate in March 1983. The committee recommended that the existing convention of using geographical names for dormitories should be continued, however, As names of Maryland bodies of water are all but exhausted, the committee proposes that the six academic buildings be named for the counties in closest proximity to Baltimore City, and that future buildings be named for other counties.” This suggestion was never implemented.

Description
An account of the resource
Albin Owings Kuhn (1916-2010) was UMBC's first president (then called chancellor). He began his career in higher education at the University of Maryland, College Park; after completing his bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees there, he served as a professor of agronomy and chair of the Agronomy Department. In 1965 when Kuhn was serving as executive vice president of the University of Maryland, Dr. Elkins asked him to be the head of the University of Maryland Baltimore campus. Kuhn agreed on condition that he would also oversee the creation of the new campus in Baltimore County – what would be become UMBC. The initial planning, development and construction of the campus was led by Kuhn who remained the campus leader until 1971; he retired from the University of Maryland System in 1982.
Dr. Kuhn's official portrait was made by Fabian Bachrach (1917-2010), a scion of the legendary family of photographers that stretched back four generations--more than 140 years. The first Bachrach studio was founded in Baltimore, and, at one time, there were studios in Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Richmond, and Washington, D.C.

Not all of the land on which the new campus was going to be built was already owned by the state. One parcel was owned by the Stabler Family, 13 acres along Walker Avenue approximately where the Library & Gallery is now situated. The State acquired the land in 1965 through an Option Contract. The letter from Albert P. Backhaus, Director of the Department of Public Improvements for the State Department of Public Works, sent the signed Option to Edmund Stabler.

Description
An account of the resource
After a long process, with many different opinions expressed, the Board of Regents finally approved plans to build a University of Maryland branch on a 425 acre tract of mostly State-owned land near Catonsville in Baltimore County. An article in The Evening Sun newspaper announced the selection of Catonsville for the new campus site and specified that the tentative site plan shows a large parking lot…"
News of the selection of the Catonsville site for a new UM campus was covered by the Baltimore dailies as well as the local County newspapers. The Times, headquartered on Sulfur Spring Road in Arbutus, naturally covered more detail about the site and the rationale for the location of the campus. It reproduced a graphic that showing the campus having a business and public administration program which was never realized. Reasons for selecting the Catonsville site included: the site was adjacent to I-695 and not too far from College Park; it was large enough to allow for future development of the campus; the state already owned most of the land. The photograph shows a view from Hilltop Building looking toward the Spring Grove Farm. The road running right to left in front of the barns is Walker Avenue.

One thousand students packed into the quad Monday, chanting slogans, waving placards, and cheering speakers in the largest mass meeting in UMBC's recent history. The rally followed reports in the Sunpapers, News American, and the Washington Star of a State Board of Higher Education proposal to close down UMBC and turn the campus into an industrial park." – Retriever, March 4, 1981
As reported in the Retriever, students rallied on the Quad against reports that UMBC could be shut down by SBHE. Timed to coincide with a visit by University President John Toll to address a faculty gathering, the rally featured SGA president Scott Rifkin and State Senator Tim Hickman, a UMBC alumnus. When the rally ended, the crowd squeezed into Dining Hall I to hear remarks by Chancellor Dorsey and President Toll. Dorsey stated: If the threat is real, we are prepared to fight it." Toll deplored the report as maximally damaging to UMBC coming as it did in the middle of the recruitment season for faculty and students, and on the morning of our defense of the university budget in the state legislature."

The African-American Studies Department planning committee meeting in 1973 included Dr. Daphne Harrison (second from left). After Dr. Njaka stepped down, Dr. Harrison served as Acting Director of the department; a search was instituted that resulted in the appointment of Dr. Willie Bediako Lamousé-Smith as the new department chair in 1975. The department revamped its curriculum and added new courses in the areas of the African diaspora in Africa, North America, and the Caribbean. In addition, the W.E.B. Dubois Distinguished Lecture Series was established. Harrison succeeded Lamousé-Smith as chair, serving from 1981 to 1992. Harrison gained international renown for her book Black Pearls: Blues Queens of the 1920 and later became the first director of the UMBC Center for the Humanities. On the occasion of the twenty-fifth anniversary of the department in 1995, it was renamed the Africana Studies Department.

An account of the resource
UMBC's fascination with chess began early in the campus history. A query was sent to The Retriever in October 1967 asking What can be done about organizing a chess club at UMBC?" By 1968, an intramural chess tournament was hosted by the Chess Club with three divisions resulting in a playoff of the three divisional winners. The tournament was expected to take about five weeks to conclude. In 1972, the Chess Club invited chess master Larry Kaufman, an MIT graduate who was ranked 16th in the nation, to play simultaneous games against UMBC Chess Club members and any others who wished to participate. Twenty-two contestants played against Kaufman on Wednesday, September 20, 1972 in simultaneous matches. Kaufman won all games except one draw against graduate student Mike Woodward, M.S. '75, biological sciences. Skip Boyd's photograph captures the intensity of the moment.
