The Women's Center
The Women’s Center was founded in 1991. The Women’s Center advances gender equity from an intersectional feminist perspective through co-curricular programming, support services, and advocacy for marginalized individuals and communities.” The Center’s first location was Room 207 in Gym I and it moved several times from September 1999 until 2004, before finally settling in on the ground floor of The Commons. The fabric poster is comprised of hands cut from various types of fabric, each containing text written in fabric paint identifying reasons why the campus needs the Women’s Center and what the Center means to people in the UMBC community. As noted in the Center’s 2005 annual report, These phrases regarding safety, peace, belonging, support and comfort offer a small snapshot of a bigger phenomena within the Center’s walls.
